Low flow fixtures

Low flow fixtures are readily available to significantly reduce household water use.  They are designed to use just enough water to be effective, thus saving excess drinking water that usually goes down the drain. One of the main sources of household water consumption is the toilet, with older models using up to 13 litres per flush. Older models of faucets and showerheads are can also contribute to excessive water usage.

Installing low flush or dual flush toilets and low flow faucets and showerheads is easy to do can significantly reduce water usage in the home. Low flush toilets use 6 litres per flush or less and are just as effective as older models that use more than twice that amount. Another option is a dual flush toilet, which offers a 4.1 litres or less and 6 litres option.  Some of the newer models of showerheads use up to 70% less water then the older models, for example, the flows from energy-efficient showerheads range from as low as 3.8 litres per minute (L/min) up to 9.5 L/min, with the most common around 5 L/min. These compare to older units at around 14 L/min (http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/residential/personal/new-homes/water-conservation.cfm?attr=4).

Another easy way to reduce water consumption installing aerators on your faucets. This simple and easy installation can save up save up to 40% of the water used for hand washing. If an aerator is already installed on your faucet, it will have its rated flow imprinted on the side. This should read 2.75 gpm (gallons per minute) or lower. If the flow is more than 2.75 gpm, replace it with a low-flow aerator (http://www.bchydro.com/guides_tips/green-your-home/water_guide/save_water_in_the_kitchen.html)
