Key Considerations

When in the market for a commercial hot water heater, there are a number of factors to consider such as capacity, fuel source, overall cost,  and unit efficiency.

Capacity

With regards to capacity, not only do you have to think about the amount that they hold, but how much will be required during peak usage. For example, if are buying for a school then you need to take into consideration the maximum amount of water needed if everyone used it at the same time, say lunch time.

Fuel Source

Fuel source is also an important consideration due to the rising costs of fossil fuels and which fuels are available to you.

Cost

Cost is always a factor, especially upfront costs. However, in many cases the more you pay upfront the less you may need to pay in the long term.  Also, if  the unit is not sized properly it may not last as long and need to be replaced sooner , thus adding to your costs.

Efficiency

As one of the most energy intensive systems in a commercial facility, efficiency is probably the most important of all. There are many different types of water heater technologies with different energy usage such as storage, instantaneous, indirect, heat pump and tankless coil (heat recovery) configurations. Commercial water heaters also include hot-water supply boilers that are configured to supply potable hot water rather than space heating.  However, the overall design of the water heating system may save the most energy and cost.
