Air Filtration Systems

There are several different types of air filters on the market.  The most well known type is the HEPA system, which is not a brand but a design of filter.  It is an acronym standing for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor.  Other types of physical barrier air filtration systems exist. All are rated on an efficiency scale, called a MERV scale, which rates them according to the particles they filter out.

HEPA filters are excellent at filtering out a large number of very small particles – up to 97+%.  Unfortunately, they restrict air flow and can be challenging to work into an HVAC system.  Restricted airflow will compromise the ability of the heating system to work efficiently, and as the furnace draws it can encourage the air to route around the filters rather than through them.  Luckily LifeBreath has come up with a solution.  Using their Turbulent Flow Principle, their HEPA filters claim to operate without slowing down the air flow.  Ask R&B if this type of system is right for your home.

Mid Efficiency Filters can be just as good.  They will capture 75% of particles but they can also move way more air.  The increased number of cycles completed per hour in effect makes them even more effective than a HEPA filter plus they work better with an HVAC system in allowing better air flow.

Entry level Barrier filters are standard on most systems.  These work well in conjunction with the higher efficiency filters since they remove the larger particles that tend to clog up the finer filters.  They are also very cost effective and easy to change.  If you think your standard furnace filter is due for a change, simply call our office and we’ll arrange to bring one with us and will replace it free of charge when we come for your annual service.
